Updating an Existing Apartment Building Fire Safety Plan
An older Fire Safety Plan may no longer reflect how your apartment building operates today. Even if it was previously approved by the Fire Department, changes to the building, its fire protection systems or emergency procedures may require revisions.
Under Section 2.8 of the Ontario Fire Code, applicable Fire Safety Plans must be reviewed at least every 12 months and revised as necessary.
Your Fire Safety Plan may need updating if there have been changes to:
Building layouts, exits or common areas
Fire alarm, sprinkler or standpipe systems
Property management or supervisory staff
Emergency contacts and staff responsibilities
Building occupancy or use of individual spaces
Renovations or construction activities
Emergency procedures or evacuation arrangements
Sterling Safety can review your current plan against the building's existing conditions and recommend the updates needed. Where required, we can also assist with submitting the revised document to the local Fire Department.

Does my Apartment Building Need a Fire Safety Plan in Ontario?
Fire Safety Plans are required for many apartment buildings and condominiums under Section 2.8 of the Ontario Fire Code. Whether a particular property requires one depends on factors such as building height, occupancy, fire alarm systems and other building characteristics.
A Fire Safety Plan is more than a document kept at the front entrance. It establishes emergency procedures, identifies important fire protection systems and outlines the responsibilities of building management and supervisory staff.
If you are unsure whether your building requires a Fire Safety Plan, Sterling Safety can review the basic property information and help determine the applicable requirements.

How often should an apartment building Fire Safety Plan be updated?
Where a Fire Safety Plan is required under Section 2.8 of the Ontario Fire Code, it must be reviewed at least every 12 months and revised when necessary to reflect changes to the building or its use.
Can you update an existing Fire Safety Plan?
Yes. If you have an existing plan, we can review the document, assess the current building conditions and prepare the necessary revisions. A complete replacement may not always be required.
Do you prepare the drawings too?
Yes. We can prepare fire safety drawings as part of the project, where required.
Can you help after Fire Safety inspection?
Yes. If you have received documentation from Fire Services, send us a copy and we can review the Fire Safety Plan-related requirements.
Will you submit the plan to Fire Services?
Submission support can be included in your project. Your quote confirms who handles submission, municipal fees and revisions following review comments.
